Created in 1995, HON is a non-profit, non-governmental organization accredited to the United Nations Economic and Social Council.

The HONcode and its 8 principles (available in 35 languages) aim to improve the quality of health information on the Internet. The HONcode seal of approval is attributed to health websites that respect the 8 principles defined in the HONcode charter, letting users know that they can trust the information that they find on the website.
