hooverZoom: Full-Size Image Popup on Hover

"hooverZoom" is a Firefox add-on that pops up full-size images or videos when you hover over their links. It enhances the browsing experience on media-rich sites like Reddit by dynamically loading content, allowing navigation through photo albums, and utilizing MP4 videos instead of GIFs when available. Users can also manage browser history and tweak settings for optimal usage. Note that some features may require moderation access on Reddit due to recent API changes.

Add-on summary

this add-on intent is to popup a full-size image or video file when you hover the mouse over a link to such, saving you a click. very helpful for media-rich but shallow news / discussion sites such as Reddit.

  • dynamically load image content with specific site handlers
  • photo albums, navigation via mouse wheel & arrow keys
  • load MP4 video in place of animated GIF when available (smaller, faster)
  • add links with shown popups to browser history (optional)
  • minimal, small footprint

** I've read about some changes to the Reddit API with the whole "charging for apps" debacle... you may need to be logged in with a moderator account in order for this mod to work properly on Reddit. apparently being mod of any sub will work, even a tiny private one.

** when the add-on is first added you will need to refresh any already loaded pages to see effects.

** if you're not seeing as many popups as you'd like try placing a single period '.' into the Scrape List and empty the Scrape List Block boxes on the options page to check every mouseover for media.

** some cross-domain videos will not load due to OpaqueResponseBlocking, the only control for this is in about:config
